Ain’t Hitting Me Yet

This song is a picture of sweet insanity.  It started on a cold Minnesota spring morning, waking up in a tiny ground level apartment staring out the dirty windows and the watching the remaining brown snow melt away.  Still getting used to seeing people walking about in masks.  Here I was reflecting on another new apartment, another new beginning, yet another fresh start, and all after; after another relapse, another toxic relationship, and another few months freshly sober.  I sat down at the piano and just hit the C to the 6th chord and back.  There was a serenity and a hope setting in with those two simple chords that bonded the feeling.  The idea of getting away and leaving sounded great in that moment.  And what came next was just the story of a man who’d lost a lot of time doing the same “insane” thing again and now picking up the pieces and building a life again alone and happy… all the while fighting these urges to want the woman and the bottle back.  The 2 deadliest things.

Lyrics

Time slowly slipping away
I’m thinking what I’ve lost
I’m leaving on a jet plane
Count it all as loss

Cause you can’t fight something
When you got nothing
Nothing but sticks n stones

I’m thinking that it’s okay
I’ll just go it alone

It still ain’t hitting me yet
I want you back
It’s a little too late for that
I want you back
I got to move on
I want you back
I got to move on
And I don’t want to do that

I’m thinking that this whole place
We let it burn to the ground
Hands free out on the freeway
Hey pass it all around
Cause you can’t love someone if they don’t get it
I need to lay this down
I’m thinking that it’s okay
I’ll just go it alone

It still ain’t hitting me yet
I want you back
It’s a little too late for that
I want you back
I got to move on
I want you back
I got to move on
And I don’t want to do that

So I run away through the dark of this night
I think I’m okay
But they’re chasing me down
All the same old cliches
You take it one day at a time
And that’s all you need babe

It still ain’t hitting me yet
I want you back
It’s a little too late for that
I want you back

It still ain’t hitting me yet
I want you back
It’s a little too late for that
I want you back
I got to move on
I want you back
I got to move on
But I don’t want to do that

Yep it still ain’t hitting me yet
I want you back
It’s a little too late for that
I want you back
I got to move on
